How to get your brand named in AI answers

Clicks are shrinking. Mentions are the new currency, and most of them are earned somewhere other than your homepage.

The short answer

How do I get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI answers?

Write pages that answer your buyers' real questions plainly, cover the follow-up questions too, and keep your facts identical everywhere. Then earn mentions on the sites AI tools read most, such as YouTube, Wikipedia, Reddit and respected trade press. Google says there is no special trick; the brands that get named are the clearest and most cited.

When an AI summary appears at the top of Google, people stop scrolling. Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when a summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on 1% of visits.

Read that last number twice. Being cited as a source is nice. Being named in the answer is what changes a buyer’s shortlist, because most of them will never click through to check.

The answer is the new first page

For twenty years the goal was a blue link near the top. That still matters, and Google’s own documentation says AI features draw on the same index. But the moment of decision has moved up the page. A founder asking which agencies make documentary-style brand films reads one paragraph. So does a director asking what a nonprofit website needs. Many of them act on that paragraph alone.

Pew also found that people ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% of pages without one. The search ends at the answer. If your name is not in it, you were not in the room.

Google says there is no secret, and means it

Plenty of consultants now sell “AI optimization” packages. Google’s guidance for site owners is blunt: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. That is the bar.

The same page explains something more useful. Both features may use what Google calls “query fan-out,” issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build one response. In practice the AI is asking the follow-up questions your buyer has not typed yet, and pulling from whoever answered them well.

That changes how a site should be built. One page that says “we do branding” gives the machine nothing to pull. A set of pages that answer what a rebrand costs in time, what to fix first, and how to brief a studio gives it a reason to quote you.

Google adds one technical note worth acting on: make sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page. If your schema says one thing and your page says another, you are teaching the machine not to trust you.

Most of the evidence lives off your site

This is the part most brands miss. In Pew’s sample, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries. AI answers lean on what other people say about a subject, and so do buyers. In Edelman’s 2026 research on brand trust, 41% of people said what unpaid people say about a brand has the biggest impact on whether they trust it, against 20% who pointed to what the brand says about itself.

So the work is two jobs. Make your own site the clearest explanation of what you do. Then make sure the rest of the web agrees, in places these systems read: a YouTube channel that shows the work, an accurate entry wherever your industry keeps one, interviews in trade press, real answers in the communities where your buyers ask questions.

What to do this month

Start with the questions. Pull twenty from your sales calls and inbox, then add the search terms people already use to find you in Google Search Console. Group them, and give each group a page that answers it in the first two sentences, in words a buyer would use.

Then write the follow-ups. For every main page, list the three questions a smart buyer asks next and answer them on the page or on linked pages. This is the fan-out working in your favor.

Make your facts identical everywhere. Name, location, services, founder, year founded. Check your site against your Google Business Profile. Then check LinkedIn and every directory listing. Contradictions make a model hedge, and a hedging model leaves you out.

Put the proof where it can be read. Case studies with real names, numbers your clients have approved, and video with accurate titles and descriptions. A film nobody can find in text is invisible to a language model.

Earn one outside mention a month. A podcast appearance, a quote in a trade article, a talk that gets posted. It is slow, so competitors skip it. That is exactly why it compounds in your favor.

How to tell if it is working

You will not see a neat “AI traffic” number. Google counts these appearances inside the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, so watch impressions on question-style queries. Track branded searches over time; if more people search your name, more people are hearing it somewhere. And ask new inquiries how they found you, adding “an AI assistant” as an option.

One honest limit: nobody can guarantee a mention, including Google, whose documentation says meeting the requirements does not guarantee a page will be shown. Anyone promising otherwise is selling a feeling.

Our prediction, labeled as one: over the next two years the brands that win AI search will look a lot like the brands that win word of mouth. Clear about what they do, consistent in how they say it, and talked about by people who have no reason to flatter them.

Still wondering?

Google says no. Its guidance states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard indexing, a page eligible for a snippet, and structured data that matches your visible text are what count.

Yes, because AI features draw on the same search index. What changes is the goal. Clear answers and outside mentions now matter as much as rankings, since the answer itself is where many buyers decide.

There is no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee inclusion. Fixing unclear pages and inconsistent facts can help within weeks of being recrawled. Outside mentions take months to build, which is why it pays to start now.

Each assistant has its own way of finding and weighing sources, and none publishes a full list. The common thread is that they favor clear, well-cited information that other reputable sites agree with, so the same groundwork helps across all of them.
